Abstract:
How does an economy composed of decentralized, heterogeneous, and interdependent agents with incomplete information coordinate itself? Characterizing an equilibrium configuration does not necessarily amount to explaining the process through which economic coordination emerges and evolves. This expositoryprogrammatic paper provides an integrative synthesis of the first stage of a research program aimed at reinterpreting microeconomics as a theory of coordination rather than exclusively as a theory of equilibrium. From a complex-systems perspective, it argues that much of this process takes place at a mesoeconomic level constituted by markets, networks, organizations, and institutions that structure interactions among agents. The paper brings together results and mechanisms developed in previous and ongoing work through a dynamic grammar of accumulation, adaptation, diffusion, selection, thresholds, and endogenous network formation. This perspective gives rise to the notions of relational microfoundations and coordination regimes, within which equilibrium constitutes a particular case. The aim is not to present a fully developed general theory, but to conceptually organize the main results of this first stage and demonstrate their coherence within a broader research agenda on economic coordination, complexity, and the mesoeconomic level.
