Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to clarify the beginnings of diplomatic relations between Colombia as an independent republic, and the European powers and USA. The origin of diplomatic relations between Colombia and the United Kingdom, Portugal, France, USA and eventually Spain are the core part of this article, and it will be demonstrated that commercial -and therefore economic- affairs were the basement for diplomatic relations of the newly-created republic with the rest of the world.
