Abstract:
This paper is an attempt at evaluating the overall performance of transit systems in major European cities. We rely on parametric and non-parametric methods to make intermodal and intercity comparisons. We identify economies of density, vehicle capacity and higher vehicle speed. We also find a high correlation between costs and subsidies. Concerning intermodal comparisons, results suggest that streetcars do not fill a significant gap between buses and subways. We conclude with the identification of some plausible role models in the sector. Privatised British firms are among the first on our list in terms of technical performance.
