Abstract:
This working paper proposes a study of the place that Frenchmenattribute to dinnertime in relation to their evening and other activities. Theanalysis uses data from surveys conducted by INSEE in 1986 and 1998. Wepropose as analytical basis for the study to use sequential analysis of the periodin which meals are concentrated, using a method borrowed from molecularbiology (Optimal Matching Analysis). A comparison of evenings, considered inpairs, allows us to distinguish between types of organization of activities properto specific social groups. In contrast to arguments suggesting the end oftraditional organization of mealtimes, this study demonstrates a great stabilityof the dinner sequence and a continuing importance of mealtimes incontemporary France.
