Abstract:
Using longitudinal data from the Echantillon Demographic Permanent (EDP), this paperexamines patterns of ethnic intermarriage in France for a long period of time (1968-1999)investigating particularly its possible implications on socio-economic achievement ofimmigrants and their participation in the labour market. An effort to synthesizeintermarriage theoretical perspectives is engaged by integrating both individual andcontextual variables in the analysis of the differences in intermarriage patterns of ethnicgroups. These differences don’t seem to match systematically the canonical model ofassimilation. When examining the effect of intermarriage on immigrants’ employments, this study puts the stress on the possible perception of intermarriage rather as a mediumof assimilation than as its revealing sign. The positive effect of intermarriage onimmigrants’ employments seems to be closely linked to the acquisition of nationalityfacilitated by the latter.
