Abstract:
This paper is concerned with the relationship between the unemployment insurance and the unemployment level. After a short but critical survey of the available international literature, the paper develops a macroeconomic analysis of unemployment outflow rates in Belgium. The focus is on the effect of the aggregate replacement ratio and of the rate of disqualification for benefit. The analysis uses both classical and cointegration methods. The replacement ratio turns out to be very negatively correlated with the aggregate outflow rate. The effect of the rate of disqualification is much more ambiguous.
