Trends in Worker Flows on the Labour Market and Some Consequences for Unemployment: France 1968-93

Abstract: The 6 rates of transition between employment, unemployment and inactivity on the French labour market are decomposed into trends and cycles. Contrary to other countries like the UK, almost all rates have a significant trend between 1968 and 1993. A striking result is that a growing fraction of the workers leaving employment choose unemployment rather than inactivity. This evolution is shown to be women's rising participation and their the stronger attachment to the labour market. The consequences are important changes in the ergodic distribution of workers in the three states, which can be associated with a rise in unemployment by about 4% of the labour force in the 80's.
