Abstract:
This paper tries to find the social-political roots of the poor performance of the economy of Pernambuco in the last 24 years. It defends the hypothesis that the traditional oligarchies’ leaderships in the state’s process of industrialization and the political force of the popular classes led to the reinforcement of the social contradictions and therefore causing a lack of involvement by the government in long terms politics. The focus in short terms benefits, seeking to attract political support, unable the key players, which represented the political power in the state, to insist in the execution of structural projects, delaying the economical development on the long term.the paper argues that overcoming this problem demands a process of conscientiousness by the several antagonistic political forces, in order to define a minimum platform of common interest for the whole the state.
