Abstract: This paper presents two major economic models that have been implemented in Pernambuco in the last forty years and are the major alternatives faced by State societies in Northeast Brazil. It identifies the class structure that is typical in this region and indicates their relationships on the support of each model in the particular case of Pernambuco. Some tests of the economic performance of these models are pursued through their impact on GDP growth rate and the rate of unemployment in the major Metropolitan area of the State. Time series estimated models points for a better performance of the popular model, when compared to the conservative model.
