Migration and Trust: Evidence on Assimilation from Internal Migrants

Abstract: I study whether internal migrants’ generalized trust adjusts to their destination environment, using Swiss Household Panel data that track the same individuals before and after they move between cantons. An event-study difference-in-differences design compares movers with migrants who have not yet moved. I estimate trust increases of 0.14 standard deviations for moves to cantons with higher trust than the origin and decreases of 0.10 for moves to lower-trust cantons. Changes emerge within the first few years. Complementary estimates remain positive after accounting for measured destination trustworthiness. These findings suggest that generalized trust can adjust relatively quickly following migration.
