Abstract:
In this project, we examine the distribution of intrahousehold resources in Uzbekistan and measure the amount of gender bias among children. We employ methodology, developed by Angus Deaton and others, which allows us to use household expenditure data to examine patterns of household resources allocation. We pay special attention to the so-called zero consumption problem in survey data and employ particular parametric and semiparametric techniques to properly tackle the problem. Our results indicate that, out of six groups of adult goods, alcohol and tobacco consumption show the incidence of discrimination against girls, but we fail to detect more broad-based evidence of discrimination in other instances.
