Abstract:
We investigate agglomeration economies that affect performance of firms producing tradable goods in Russian cities; performance is measured by the growth rate of enterprise revenue during 2001-2004. We find significant inverted U-shaped localization economies and positive economies from diversity of industries in a city. Differences between 5 specially defined classes of industries and new and old generations of enterprises are analyzed. We find that localization economies in Russia are not fully utilized as about 40% of enterprises concentrate at zero localization level.
