Market integration and trade in the Mediterranean, 1500-1900

Abstract:
"During the early-modern period economic leadership shifted away from the Mediterranean and towards North Western Europe. Italy and Spain were in decline, and the Netherlands and England were on the rise. Associated with this shift was a process of increasing trade and market integration in parts of North Western Europe. Whilst we are led to assume that a process of retreat and even disintegration was simultaneously occurring in the Mediterranean, it has been neglected by formal investigation. This paper aims to fill this gap by examining the integration of markets in the Mediterranean region during this period of changing fortunes. The findings suggest that we question market and trade led models of economic growth."
