Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between successor and planning characteristics and post-transfer profitability in small businesses. Planning (by means of a written plan) is found to positively relate to profitability, particularly for non-family-firms. This study suggests that certain variables, especially the use of outside advisors may have an opposite effect on profitability.
