Abstract: The analysis of agriculture and cattle activities in localities of the state of Guanajuato privileges production for their own consumption. Just a few municipios produce in excess for the country markets, mostly in grains, porks, poultry and alfalfa. Complementarity within the sector and with other sectors still remains limited. There are two regions with clear competitive advantages. Those in the west (Pénjamo, Abasolo, Valle de Santiago, Irapuato and Salamanca) reveal competitive strenght in porks and grains. In the east (Celaya and neighbors) are devoted succesfully to poultry and alfalfa. The rest may be more diversified in products for their own markets. The cluster analysis technique delivers highly significant relations between production shares and per capita production in most cases. Pénjamo is leader in grains and porks and in poultry and alfalfa the leaders are Apaseos and a few others in the east such as Dolores Hidalgo, Allende and Celaya. The policy implications, beyond the support for own consumer needs, may be to foster revealed competitive advantages through linkages to other inputs. These actions are needed in selective and non-redundant applications with respect to market forces.
