Abstract: This exercise estimated competitiveness for the 32 federal states of Mexico taking into account production, productivity, employment and wages in 82 activities representing 95% of total GNP. There are two types of states. The dozen of competitive states are more diversified and show higher levels of productivity and wages. They are also better integrated to the international economy, and comprise mature states as Nuevo León, DF, Querétaro, Estado de México, Jalisco, border states and Guanajuato. For the other twenty states, the lack of productivity is compensated through lower salaries. These include Southern and Southeastern states, plus most in the lower Pacific coast. These conditions remain the same over the recent years. In short, we can not expect convergency merely by the effect of time. All the contrary, states competing on the basis of productivity become more competitive without having to restore their competitive advantage in lower salaries.
