No 9528, Working Papers from Economic Research Forum

Abstract: The paper focuses on natural resource depletion, fresh water scarcity, and the health impacts of air pollution and the lack of safe drinking water and sanitation services. Aspects of the policy regimes underlying the current state of affairs and future trends are highlighted. Major reforms for sustainable and clean growth and widely shared access to basic environmental services are stressed. Although reforms will involve adjustments, the cost of inaction may be unaffordable. Increased public environmental awareness is likely to raise the willingness to accept change.
