The Methodology of Surfing the Virtual Public Sphere: The Case of the Paris Riots of 2005

Abstract: In this paper I will describe the methodological process used in relation to the research of a particular research question: how the youths in the suburbs of Paris made use of the internet as a purely digital medium in the riots of 2005, and actually took this further in the riots in 2007. It describes the process of locating the field of inquiry, the navigation on the internet in search of information of the field and the actual field itself. Or, in the words of Hine (forthcoming), the (…) ways that a study of the internet might be defined, in terms of the place one chooses to begin and the decisions that are made about avenues to pursue. That is, this paper will give the turns and twists in my search for the unofficial versions of the riots in Paris, and use this as the basis of a methodological discussion.
