Statistical Portrait of NPO Corporations in the Nonprofit Satellite Accounts (in Japanese)

Naoto Yamauchi (), Yoshiho Matsunaga and Tomoko Takahashi

ESRI Discussion paper series from Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI)

Abstract: The second paper examines the statistical data regarding the economic activity of NPO corporations established in accordance with the Law to Promote Specified Nonprofit Activities, and estimates the nonprofit satellite accounts for this particular type of organizations. Results showed that an estimated 146.0 billion yen in output and a value added of 77.1 billion yen were produced by the NPO corporation sector in 2002. While these figures are extremely small compared to the Japanese economy as a whole, these growth rates have been in recent years, notably higher than those of other sectors of the Japanese economy. The output of the nonprofit sector has grown steadily along with an increase in the number of organizations and the sector is expected to play an important role in the future of the Japanese economy. Periodic nation-wide research will be required for the development of NPI satellite accounts.
