Corporate Debt Market in India: Key Issues and Policy Recommendations

Abstract: The working paper outlines the significance of debt market in general and its role in accelerating the development of economic growth in particular. It reviews various regulatory and non-regulatory developments, instruments available, investors, issuers and intermediaries in the Indian context. The paper also identifies several weaknesses in the present system along with areas hindering the growth of debt market. Recommendations of the paper include development of corporate debt repo market, institution of debt manager, sound safe and robust infrastructure, regulatory framework, investor profile and comprehensive database.
