Abstract: Produced on the occasion of World Water Day 2007, which focused on the issue of water scarcity, this publication addresses the challenges of water scarcity in relation to climate change, rural areas, water productivity, poverty and food. Current and future trends and different approaches to water resources management are presented in order to maximize economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems.
