Identity and Marginality in North East India: Challenges for Social Science Research

Working Papers from eSocialSciences

Abstract: Conceptualising the Northeast as a singular territory is problematic. But this construction determines the way the region is governed by the Indian state that propagates the idea of a shared identity among peoples from various parts of the region. The Northeast, however, is as diverse as India itself in terms of linguistic, cultural, and ethnic representation. It is inappropriate to portray the region merely as a homogenous category. The recently held national seminar at the University of Hyderabad raised significant research issues.
