Abstract: This thematic review focuses on the siting, construction and operation of large dam facilities (or their alternatives) as sources of significant conflict, and as opportunities to involve many interested parties and groups in addressing local, regional, and national issues. The review is intended to improve understanding about large dam conflicts, identify essential principles and decision-making approaches for public involvement and conflict resolution, and provide a set of best practices in these areas for large dams or their alternatives.
