Abstract: Over the past years, increasing attention to how “lootable†natural resources fund armed conflict has spurred the development of innovative policies and mechanisms, like the Kimberly Process – a diamond certification scheme. These sought to remove money from conflict in order reduce the military capacity and social base of illegal armed groups. Could the same be done for cocaine and heroin or were there unique features and challenges to drug-related conflicts? How could one build sustainable peace in areas where governance is undermined by drug mafias?
