Beyond The Human Development Index

Abstract: The paper is a preliminary attempt to examine the human development scenario in Maharashtra. Its starting point is the Human Development Index, which indicates average levels of attainment in three dimensions of development. The paper attempts to go further than what is suggested by the Human Development Index and examine the deprivation dimensions in the context of the state of Maharashtra and incorporate them into the Human Poverty Index for the districts of Maharashtra. An attempt has also been made to define the Human Development Backlog.
