Optimal duration of exclusive breastfeeding

Abstract: In under-resourced settings, where sanitation and safe water are often lacking, breastfeeding can be life-saving. Breastfeeding protects against infectious diseases, especially gastrointestinal infections, which largely contribute to child morbidity and mortality in developing countries (1). However, if people believe that breast milk alone is nutritionally not sufficient for a baby beyond the age of three or four months, it may discourage health-care providers to recommend prolonged breastfeeding alone.
