Mumbai's Forgotten Theatre People!

Ramu Ramanathan

Working Papers from eSocialSciences

Abstract: Mumbai is a city with many cities in it. Its theatre is diverse and varied. How does one characterise it? There are different types of theatre in Mumbai. But there is ignorance about it. Theatre remains a peripheral underdog activity. There are hundreds of unsung heroes and heroines, out there. It is our tragedy that we don't know their names, nor of their existence. Because they are the real creators of Mumbai. Their voices have been suppressed. Beneath the Mumbai Shining syndrome, there's discontent and anger. This paper identifies a few trends discerned in Mumbai. Some of the cultures in evidence may see a conflict of ideas and beliefs, but hopefully the conflict will be clarifying and instructive. Some of the identities in evidence may see a conflict of ideas and beliefs, but hopefully, the conflict will be clarifying and instructive.
