Comprehensive Review of the Land Act of Bhutan, 2007 for Revision

Abstract: The need for revision of the 1979 land legislation was being felt for a long time and hence the then Ministry of Agriculture started the work on it with the formation of a multi-sector committee in 2004. The bill was submitted to the 87th session of the erstwhile National Assembly of Bhutan in July 2007 and adopted as the Land Act of Bhutan, 2007, for enforcement with effect from 1 January 2008. However, with the change in the governance system in the country, and establishment of the new Parliament in May 2008, issues on land were discussed frequently in both the houses of Parliament. It was decided by the 7th session of the first Parliament in June 2011 that work on the amendments to the Land Act of Bhutan, 2007, should be taken up by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests and submitted to its subsequent session.
