International Trade in Cultural Goods: Survey and Prospects (Japanese)

Discussion Papers (Japanese) from Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI)
Abstract:
Various discussions have been taking place, surrounding the issue of whether there should be free trade in cultural goods. International negotiations over audio-visual services have occurred through the Uruguay Round and in the adoption of the Convention on Cultural Diversity (2005). While taking these circumstances and background into account, this paper divides cultural goods into replicable cultural goods and cultural heritage (unique, non-replicable cultural goods). From an economic perspective, it examines the effect of free trade on cultural diversity and economic welfare, and introduces empirical studies. Finally, I present the remaining issues in research on international trade in cultural goods.
