Abstract:
The aim of this study is to establish a method for evaluating the activities of in-house design organizations in large Japanese corporations using a unified quantitative metric: the "KPI (Key Performance Indicator) for Design Organizations." Three surveys were conducted between 2022 and 2024, with a total of 58 companies participating. Principal component analysis consistently identified seven components as candidates for the Design Organization KPI, which were shown to significantly predict overall satisfaction through multiple regression analysis. In Japan, academic research has accumulated little knowledge on quantitative visualization of the performance of design organizations. Particularly in the field of design studies, research has traditionally focused on artistry and creativity. This study seeks to transform that paradigm by providing insights applicable to corporate design organizations.
