ORGANIC FARMING AND THE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

Abstract: In the paper we estimate an econometric model to analyse the relationship between greenhouse gases emissions from agriculture, the share of organic farming area in total utilized agricultural area and the dynamics of gross value added from agriculture as a share of GDP. The data used in econometric model covers the period 2000 - 2011 and refers to the 27 European Union countries. We demonstrated that there is an inertial effect in emissions of greenhouse gases; organic farming has a positive effect in reducing these emissions, as well as increasing the share of agriculture in total agricultural type activities.
