No 02-02, Working Papers from Agricultural and Development Economics Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO - ESA)

Abstract: The paper begins with an examination of the importance of overall economic development for food security. In turn it examines the effects on food security of policies that are necessary for economic growth. Given the essential role of agriculture in developing country economies, short-term policies and long term strategies to get agriculture moving are examined along with their effects on poverty and food security. Finally an economic analysis of policies (targeted and untargeted) specifically aimed at food security is presented.
