Abstract:
The reform of pension systems has been a main concern both in the developed and in the developing world. The basic reason is the growing awareness of the adverse effects of two demographic factors on the pay-as-you-go pension system: decrease in fertility and increase in longevity. Analysing the weakness of the pay-as-you-go pension system, the article advocates the adoption of the capitalization system; an experience that has been very successful in the Chilean case.
