Putting Research to Work So Job Quality Equals Job Quantity

Patrick T. Harker

Speech from Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia

Abstract: At a Philadelphia Fed event focusing on improving the workforce system in the Greater Philadelphia area, President and CEO Patrick Harker highlighted the Worker Voices Project’s “transformational research.” The Federal Reserve research effort focused on learning about the experiences of U.S. workers without a four-year degree through open-ended conversations. Harker stressed the importance of soft data to understanding the labor market — critical to fulfilling the Fed’s maximum employment mandate. He also said he believes that maximum employment means not only promoting conditions that spur job growth but also “promoting a climate in which workers in those jobs are treated with respect and dignity and where work isn’t just something to be rewarded but something that is truly rewarding.”
