A Snapshot of Record-High U.S. Household Debt

Mark Catanzaro

Open Vault from Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis

Abstract: Total housing debt hit $9.95 trillion at the end of 2019, a level not seen since late 2008 in nominal terms. Student and auto loans rose by about 150% and 50% over that period, making up increasing shares of U.S. household debt.
