Industrial Relations and Reliability in LDC Manufacturing

Kenneth Chomitz

Boston University - Institute for Economic Development from Boston University, Institute for Economic Development

Abstract: Problems with quality control and deadline adherence are sometimes cited as barriers to the expansion of manufactured exports from LDCs. These problems, it is argued, are not entirely idiosyncratic to particular managers or cultures. Employees' attention is strongly influenced by the structure of pay incentives and by technologically-determined monitoring costs. Supporting evidence is presented using data from a survey of 450 Indonesian manufacturing establishments, and policy implications are discussed.
