Economic Reform and Women's Employment in Cuba

Abstract: There are two stories to tell about women's employment and economic reform in Cuba. The first is the 'official version which says that during the years of the "Special Economic Period in Peacetime" of the 1990s women/s economic participation was maintened in spite of all difficulties they encounteres. The second one, which is a gendered account of transition rather than an account of women's employment says that the implications of the years of economic reform were different for men and women because of the gender divisions of labour both in the domestic sphere and in the productive economy. Both stories are based on if-act' and can be read either as complementary to each other or as contradictory. I will try to sketch out both stories.
