Abstract: Increasingly, the importance of entrepreneurship and self-employment is being acknowledged by both scientists and policy makers. High degrees of entrepreneurship (innovation) and self-employment (the number of independent enterprises) are assumed to contribute to economic growth and job creation. This study aims to set up simple models linking the number of self-employed in the Netherlands to several determinants. Our main purpose is to pave the way for modelling self-employment in more elaborate fashion in future years.
