Hammond Equity: a Generalization
Bertil Tungodden
Working Papers from Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration-
Abstract:
We generalize Hammond's characterisation of leximin by introducing a very weak two-person equity condition. In addition to strengthening the defence of the leximin principle, this result is of interest from a more technical point of view. Contrary to the present understanding in the literature of Hammond's result, it shows that neither the separability feature of Hammond Equity nor the fact that this condition effectively brings in a restriction much like ordinal level comparison are essential parts of this condition in a characterisation of leximin.
