Abstract:
Among the many outstanding accomplishments of economic Sovvietologists was the deflation of the egregiously inflated official Soviet statistics on economic growth. In sharp contrast, some authoritative Western scholars attempted to inflate official Soviet statistics on replacement. This paper seeks to show that these efforts were generally misguided and to assess, the significance of such inflation for Western scholarship on the Soviet economy.
