Tourism and the Environment in Small Islands: a Case Study of Gili Trawangan, Lombok, Indonesia

Abstract: This paper explores the nature of the relationship between international tourism and the environment in a naturally bounded area, a small tropical island. Since the 1980s international tourism in Gili Trawangan has increasingly replaced agriculture and fishing as the dominant economic activity. Tourism on the island has grown in an unplanned way and is generally small-scale with tourist needs met by accomodation in modest bungalows, and by simple restaurants at the beach edge. Finally, the paper discusses the implications of the rapid growth of tourism -albeit small-scale- for other small tropical islands that are beginning to host international tourism.
