Abstract:
Empirical analyses of the effect of abortion regulation on demographic and health outcomes has been hampered by the difficulty of reconstructiong what legal rules were in place in each state at a given point in time. Summarizing the results of a detailed review of the primary legal sources published elsewhere, this paper provides the required chronology. For three legal issues - the legality of abortion, Medicaid funding, and parental involvement - the paper reviews the broad legal issues, discusses the crucial Supreme Court cases, and invludes figures documentaing the dates on which the in-force legal rules in each state changed.
