Abstract: This article looks at some of the aspects related to in-basket development and the suggestion that it constitutes a measure of practical intelligence. An in-basket was developed using a 7-step approach designed to ensure content validity. Then, the notion that in-basket would serve as a measure of practical intelligence was examined through 3 hypotheses: (1) responses to identical problems should differ as a function of context (2) in basket results should be positively correlated with prior managerial experience, and (3) no correlation should be found between in-basket results and technical knowledge. The three hypotheses were supported. Senior managers were found to put more emphasis on strategic management activities while middle managers were found to be more operational.
