Industrial competitiveness of the European Union in a trade with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. Analysis based on market shares and comparative advantages

Abstract: Basing on the analysis of the trade flows in manufacturing goods over the period 1995-2001, this study aims to identify the sectors of manufacturing industry of the Old Member States with potentially the highest degree of competitive sensitivity to the accession of the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary (the ACC-3 group). Identification of industry sectors is made for groups of the EU-15 as a whole and the individual Member States on the 3-digit level of disaggregation of the NACE classification. The study utilized two synthetic indices based on changes in the evolution of the trade balance and corrected index of revealed comparative advantage (CRCA). Conclusions of this study should be regarded as complementary to analyses based on such determinants as competitive potential costs or productivity of the factors of production.
