Abstract: High-net-worth investors (HNWI) hold a key role in financing the path to a sustainable future. Based on 50 interviews with HNWIs we study their ideas around sustainable investing (SI) to understand the emergence of belief systems. The study is positioned in the institutional literature that looks at conflict and contestation from an idea-centric perspective to show how ideas systematically become dominant or abandoned. We identify two modes of domination as mechanisms that give rise and perpetuate systematic power. Furthermore, we grant rich insights into the debate around SI and the investor perspective. We show that the intention to establish sustainable investing can come at the cost of abandoning central objectives such as decreasing inequality and offer a new perspective on the financial return debate of SI.
