Abstract:
This paper aims at investigating the determinants of employment downsizing in French establishments between 2008 and 2010. It is based on two types of French data: data from REPONSE 2011 and interviews conducted in several establishments. It shows that workforce reduction is not always "defensive", that is driven by shortfalls in demand. It can also be "offensive". The experienced declines of activity are then consequences of groups strategies seeking for a greater profitability.
