Université Paris1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (Post-Print and Working Papers) from HAL Abstract: This contribution aims to provide a synthetic presentation of the main contributions of the economic analysis of innovation and technical progress and then to show that the idea of indefinite progress associated with the economic development that results from them is the subject of growing objections. The first part is devoted to the emergence of the concepts of useful knowledge and innovation. The second part deals with national innovation systems and with the knowledge economy. Finally, the third part underlines the importance of three points of crystallisation for the critique of technical progress: the patent system whose effectiveness an legitimacy seem more and more doubtful, the digital economy and the platforms that appear carrying dangers and finally the failure to take into account the negative external effects caused by technological upheavals, the environmental impact of wich is resulting a serious global crisis.
