After a general presentation of the Papua New Guinea's society (in the first part), this article studies the traditional land institutions and the relationships to land - often considered to be " archaic " - (second part); then the process of registration of land during the colonial period and since the independence (third part), in order to examine finally the modernity of the peasant resistances in the country (fourth part).
