Le concept de rente appliqué aux économies de la région MENA. Pertinence et dérives

Fatiha Talahite

Post-Print from HAL

Abstract: Despite the widespread use of the concept of rent within the literature on the oil countries of MENA, it is a concept lacking a sound theoretical foundation. The theory of the rentier state, considered one of the major contributions of Middle East studies to political sciences, is based on a concept imported from political economics. However, economics did not succeed in building a unified theory of rent. When studying the impact of the hydrocarbon exports on such "rentier economies", economists generally mobilize theoretical tools other than rent; the only exception is the theory of rent-seeking, which precisely does not relate to natural resources.
