Abstract: Are the nomenclatures of national statistical institutes adapted to the questions raised by the economists concerning the manufacturing sector? We show that nomenclatures are the product of a history and of compromises: they are heterogeneous and not really adapted to study the current changes of the economy. We thus propose four possible perimeters for the manufacturing sector and analyze the impact of choosing them on the economic changes on the period 1996-2002.
